" The Stingers "

Silverdale Sept 08

Leeds Children’s home, Silverdale.

The Silverdale event September 26th, 27th & 28th at the Leeds Children’s home a couple of miles to the north of the village of Silverdale

(the most northerly village in Lancashire. There’s a bit of trivia for the pub quiz)

Organized by Bob and Sandra Lindsay with the aim of having a good weekend and raise some much needed funds for a very worthy cause.

 The princely sum of £1170

The camp opened in 1914 (although it’s roots date back to 1905) to give a FREE holiday to primary school children of Leeds, hence the name.

 “The Leeds children’s holiday camp”

The camp stayed open during both WWI & WWII.

The camps founder Mayoress Mrs Helen Currer Briggs died in 1936 aged 77.

But I’m sure would be very proud of the legacy she left behind that still offers a FREE week long break to the primary school children of Leeds regardless of their individual needs.

Our very own roving “Lois Lane” Tells me.

The weather was warm and sunny all weekend making for a very pleasurable change this year.

Friday night’s social evening of “Kowasaki Harry Carey jnr. with rice or chips”

No I’m not talking about Sue’s Lamb curry ! But the revelaition that the mvt in the North West has got a lot of hidden talent. With vocalist’s and dancing.

Saturday came warm and sunny so a quick “scrap” between the Allies and Axis forces from the “North West collectors” canvas was stripped and the “big kids” went off to play with the trucks and in convoy up to “The Ship Inn” sandside.

Doubtless there are tales of sand castles, bucket and spades, paddling in the sea and collecting crabs from the rock pools.

The convoy returned in dribs and drabs with a lot making their own way back to camp.

The evening entertainment was supplied by “Sneak Preview” proving yet again that there is some hidden talent here “Up-North”

Sunday was a nice relaxing day recovering from the festivities of the previous nights libaitions. The only “down side” to the weekend was the returning traffic on the M6. But with such a warm weekend it seemed that the over heated cobble stones of Manchester and surounding area were abandond for the coast.

Many Thanks to Sandra and Bob for organising such a pleasurable weekend.
